5-year-old boy fatally shot at Redfield home

REDFIELD -- The Arkansas State Police and the Redfield Police Department are investigating the death of a 5-year-old boy who was shot Friday morning at his home on Huck Finn Boulevard in Redfield.

The boy was pronounced dead Friday afternoon at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, just a few hours after the shooting, the Pulaski County coroner's office said.

Details about the shooting were scarce Friday afternoon, though a statement from state police spokesman Bill Sadler noted that the child was "critically wounded by a gunshot ... at his home" and that state police special investigators were looking into what happened, "which involves a sibling who is believed to have shot the victim."

He said names and ages of those involved, along with further details, were not being released because of the ongoing investigation.

The home, situated in a wooded area just north of downtown Redfield, was surrounded by emergency vehicles Friday afternoon as authorities prevented onlookers and members of the media from gaining closer access.

Residents in Redfield, a community of 1,297 people about 20 miles north of Pine Bluff and 26 miles south of Little Rock, were buzzing about the shooting Friday, wondering how such a tragedy could happen in their hometown.

Jana Pickins of Redfield offered prayers for the family.

"My heart is just broken, and we as a community are just in shock," Pickins said. "We are close-knit around here. I just pray for peace for this family. This is just a terrible situation for them."
