Memphis officer charged with domestic assualt

An off-duty Memphis police officer was charged over the weekend with domestic assault, police said Monday.

About 2:10 a.m. Saturday, Shelby County sheriff's deputies responded to an assault at a Memphis home and found a woman with swelling and bruising on her face hiding in a closet, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement.

Deputies found Brian Cofer, 28, a Memphis police officer since 2010, in the backyard with a laceration on his eye.

The woman and Cofer had no recollection of what happened before deputies arrived, police said.

Cofer was off-duty at the time. He has been “relieved of duty pending the outcome of this investigation,” according to the department.
