Central Arkansas bicycle advocates will hold their annual Ride of Silence at 6 p.m. Wednesday in downtown Little Rock.
Not a fun ride and not a race, this is a somber parade mourning the traffic deaths of cyclists.
"Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of cyclists themselves," organizer Mason Ellis wrote in a news release.
"The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its participants to ride slowly, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride."
Participants will gather at the parking lot at the corner of South Main and 13th streets to ride in a silent procession to the state Capitol. They will stand in front of the steps for a short ceremony in remembrance of those who were killed while riding within the past year.
The release from Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas lists seven Arkansans and one man from Missouri who died since the 2014 Ride of Silence while cycling on public right of ways in Arkansas: Jimmy Hood, 55, of Russellville; Cody Dean Miller, 11, of Judsonia; Woody Allen Thompson, 44, of Batesville; Alicia R. Carlisle, 32, of Wynne; Clinton Wayne Pannell, 39, of Heber Springs; Vivian Barton, 62, of Fort Smith; Edward White, 51, of Judsonia; Johnie C. Brooks, 72, of Naylor, Mo. (killed in Clay County).
