Hope man arrested in 2014 homicide

A Hope man was arrested and charged with capital murder on Thursday after he purportedly beat a man to death in 2014, police say.

Lucas Wayne Barnett, 30, was arrested about 4:45 p.m. and is being held without bail in the Hempstead County jail, Hope Police Department Assistant Chief Kimberly Tomlin said in a news release.

Police arrested Barnett after investigating the July 2, 2014, death of Gary Tubberville, 57, of Hope, Tomlin said. Officers found Tubberville beaten and unresponsive inside his home in the 300 block of South Ferguson Street, police said.

Officers also arrested Sharlee Cole, 21, of Hope and charged her with hindering apprehension or prosecution in connection with Tubberville's death, the release states.

Cole is being held in the Hempstead County jail in lieu of $500,000 bond, Tomlin said.
