It’s Lexi by a point

Lexi Weeks and Tori Weeks have competed against each other all their lives, so it was no surprise to see the 19th state high school heptathlon come down to the twin sisters from Cabot. Tori Weeks held off her sister to win the 800 meters, the final event Thursday, but Lexi still managed to edge out Tori by a point for the overall heptathlon championship at Panther Stadium in Cabot.

Lexi Weeks finished the two-day competition with 4,481 points, with Tori finishing as the runner-up with 4,480 points.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Lexi Weeks, who led Tori by a mere six points going into the 800 meters. “The only way it could be better is if we tied.”

Little Rock Parkview’s Jada Baylark finished third overall with 4,334 points.

Saucier extends streak

Joey Saucier lived up to the legacy for Rogers Heritage.

Saucier, a senior who will play football at Air Force, took advantage of a second-place finish in the discus Thursday to win the 52nd state high school decathlon at Panther Stadium in Cabot with 6,012 points.

The victory marked the third consecutive year that a Rogers Heritage athlete has won the decathlon. Daniel Spickes (2014) and Alex Miles (2013) won the previous two titles.

“I’m really proud of the Heritage legacy that we have,” said Saucier, who was joined in the top 10 by teammate Brandon Shaw, a junior who finished sixth with 5,631 points. “We have athletes who are strong in almost every event.” Lake Hamilton’s Donell West was second with 5,890 points, while Hamburg’s Lorenzo Watkins was third with 5,846 points.
