UA junior one of 58 Truman Scholars

A University of Arkansas at Fayetteville student interested in public policy has been named a Truman Scholar.

John "Grant" Addison of Cabot is one of 58 students nationally to receive the honor from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation.

The award goes to students based on academic achievement, leadership and commitment to public service. Addison, a junior, is the only Arkansas recipient this year and will receive $30,000 to pay for graduate school.

"I plan to use this award to pursue graduate degrees in law and public policy so that I can be fully equipped to serve in the public arena. It is my wish to then return to Arkansas and play a role in improving the state's education system," Addison said in a statement released by UA.

The university on Monday also noted recipients of other competitive national awards.

Armin Mortazavi of White Hall is one of 260 students nationally to be named a Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

Also named a 2015 Goldwater Scholar from Arkansas is Hendrix College student Jacob Higgins.

That award covers college costs up to $7,500 per year.

Elise Clote of Glendale, Mo., and Michael Reinisch of Germany are the only UA students among 50 Udall Scholars. The award is given out in part based on commitment to careers in the environment, American Indian health care, or tribal public policy. The award provides up to $5,000.
