FAYETTEVILLE -- A Fayetteville man was arrested Friday after police said he killed a 6-week-old puppy, according to a preliminary police report Saturday.

The puppy was decapitated when police found it, according to the report.

Joshua Shane Woodruff, 20, 1235 W. Mount Comfort Road, Apt. 304, in Fayetteville was arrested in connection with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony.

Police were called to Woodruff's home Thursday about a puppy killed by Woodruff on Wednesday, the report shows.

Woodruff told police he was upset at the puppy for using the bathroom inside and for having fleas, according to the report. Woodruff first told police he let the puppy outside on the third-story apartment's balcony and "kicked it with his foot causing it to fall on the sidewalk," according to the report. Later, he said he had picked up the puppy and thrown it over the guardrail, according to the report.

Woodruff told police the puppy died immediately upon hitting the pavement, according to the report. Police found a dark blood spot on the sidewalk, the report said.

Woodruff threw the puppy's dead body into a wooded area but later went back to bury it with his pocket knife, the report shows. Animal control found the puppy's carcass, but its head was gone, according to the report. Woodruff denied knowing what happened to the dog's head, police said.

Woodruff was at the Washington County Detention Center with no bond Saturday.
