Teens need the jobs

Every teenager that is 16 and older has started looking for a job for the summer. It is so hard getting a job because they have mostly been taken by adults. If a 16-year-old with no job experience and a 26-year-old with experience apply at Outback, who do you think they are going to choose? The person hiring is going to choose the more experienced person over a teenager.

It is extremely hard for teens to find a job because of all the adults not having a career. There should be a law that by the time a person is 30, he/she should not work at any fast-food places or other jobs that could be held by teenagers, except for managerial positions.

I think if this were to happen, there will be more people going to college getting degrees than just thinking they can work at McDonald's and get by for the rest of their lives.

None of his business

Gary W. Lemon of Cabot sure can spout off about the Clintons.

She deleted her personal emails and turned the rest over. That's none of Lemon's business.

The Clintons have a care about the country. Back a decade ago, when Hurricane Katrina hit in South Louisiana, the people were in the Louisiana Superdome packed like a can of sardines. What did George W. Bush do? He flew over and flew back to Washington, D.C. I believe Bill Clinton would have landed the helicopter and lended a helping hand.

I would rather have Hillary than Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul or Mike Huckabee. Hillary is the cream of the crop.

As for Gary W. Lemon, you can just chill out!

Words untrustworthy

In a recent sports article, Louisiana football player De'jon Harris committed to the Razorbacks and had this to say about about a conversation between himself and Arkansas linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves: "He told me he liked three or four [Florida] linebackers out there, but he liked me better than them."

*Note to the three or four linebackers down in Florida still being recruited by Arkansas: Apparently you're not on the top of the list with the Hogs, and you may not want to believe everything you hear from this coaching staff ...

With nothing to do

Some time ago, someone told me that the skating rink in Sherwood had closed. The skating rink in Jacksonville has been closed in recent years, along with the movie theater. The closest you can go to see a movie is either Cabot or North Little Rock.

Several years ago, an old abandoned putt-putt golf facility was torn down to build a motel. And I have seen at least two ceramic studios come and go.

Times are not like they used to be. In our parents' day, people used to go dancing. Other than working out at the gym and swimming, which is seasonal, what else are kids to do?

And we wonder why our kids get into trouble. Something needs to be done.

Marry who you love

On May 16, 2014, the state Supreme Court halted all same-sex marriages within the state.

Polls in the U.S. have revealed that 45 percent of the population does not support gay marriage. Most people say they are against it because the Bible says homosexuality is a sin. Divorce is a sin but no one is holding protests to get divorce banned. The Bible also says not to judge others, but yet here we are in a country where people are getting bullied and harassed due to their sexuality.

If people want to use the Bible to justify their judgment, they cannot just pick and choose which sins they will and won't allow.

According to statistics, gay and lesbian teens are two-thirds more likely to attempt suicide than other youths, but it seems no one is being bullied for being straight. Why is anyone's sexuality a problem for other people? We should be able to love who we love without judgment.

Society today is the reason so many people are afraid to come out to their family and friends due to fear that they will be angry, or try to pray the gay away or tell them it's just a phase. In reality they can't and should not have to change just because you can't handle it.

Gay marriage should be legal because getting married to the person you love is not wrong. So why are we acting like it is?

Test tested patience

I think PARCC testing is not good for students. These standardized tests are too hard.

The test questions are sometimes difficult. One time the question asked me something I hadn't learned yet. I was really frustrated because I wanted to get the answer right and I did not just want to guess the answer. That really made me mad. I told myself I just going to move on and do better on the next question.

We should go back to Benchmark End Of Course testing, which is much easier because it is over material students have been taught. I made proficient on that test. On the PARCC test, I had to answer Part A/Part B questions. If I got Part A wrong, then I would get B wrong, too. The reason is B is usually a "support your answer" question; there should only be one part instead of two. This format is bad because students won't get full points on the test.

PARCC tests are written on a college level using words I have never heard before. It is hard to answer the question when I can't even tell what it is asking. I believe that the people that made the PARCC rushed making it. Taking it on iPads made it even more difficult because I got kicked off during the test a lot, adding to my stress.
