DHS identifies 5-year-old killed in Redfield shooting

REDFIELD -- A 5-year-old boy shot to death in a Redfield home May 15 has been identified in Arkansas Department of Human Services documents released this week.

Human Services officials added Benjamin Schrader, 5, to the state's Child Fatality Notification list on Tuesday.

A Division of Children and Family Services child fatality disclosure document released Wednesday upon request by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette was heavily redacted because Arkansas Code Annotated 12-18-1101 prohibits the Human Services Department from releasing names of siblings or information about them, spokesman Amy Webb said.

The detail about who shot Benjamin was among the redactions. The document notes that Benjamin was shot under the right side of his chin in the middle of the night and was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, where he died.

Another person whose name is redacted, "was in bed sleeping because [they] had worked the midnight shift the night before," the document said.

The report notes that other children were present inside the home at the time and that "siblings were taken into DCFS custody" after a request for a safety assessment.

No charges had been filed in the case as of Wednesday. The Arkansas State Police is investigating, though officials are not releasing any new information about the case, spokesman Bill Sadler said.

Redfield Police Chief Steve McFatridge said Wednesday that he also would not comment on the case, citing the ongoing investigation.
