Police: Car hydroplaned before fatal collision

Arkansas State Police say a car hydroplaned Thursday afternoon in Greenbrier before spinning out of control and hitting another vehicle, killing one and injuring two.

It happened about 3:25 p.m. on U.S. 65 north of Fenner Lane.

According to a report, a 2009 Dodge Avenger was northbound on the highway and rain was falling when it hydroplaned and veered out of control into the opposing lanes. It then collided with a southbound 2007 Ford van.

A passenger in the Avenger, 48-year-old Brigetta L. Smith of Fairfield Bay, suffered fatal injuries. Both drivers, meanwhile, were taken to Conway Regional Medical Center for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The death was the 188th in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
