Leader of UA research takes Oregon State job

FAYETTEVILLE -- A leader in developing research initiatives is leaving the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville to become vice president for research at Oregon State University.

Cynthia Sagers, who joined UA as a biology faculty member in 1994, also served on the Governor's Commission on Global Warming formed in 2007 after state legislators authorized the commission's creation.

In UA's quest to be among the nation's top 50 public universities, the university has sought to boost research expenditures, which are considered a marker of research output. For the most recent 12-month period ending June 30, UA tallied about $120 million in such expenditures.

In 2012, Sagers was named interim associate vice provost for research and economic development, with the appointment made permanent in 2014. An expert in plant evolution, Sager in an interview said her new duties begin Aug. 31.

Sagers praised UA's Jim Rankin, the university's vice provost for research and economic development.

"I've had great training under his leadership," Sagers said.

Sagers earned $113,624 at UA, according to university spokesman Steve Voorhies. She will earn $235,200 at her new school, according to Oregon State spokesman Steve Clark.
