3 counties getting Civil War markers

Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Markers will be added in Pulaski, Randolph and Searcy counties to commemorate events during the 1861-1865 Civil War, the state panel overseeing the program announced Monday.

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission works with local partners to tell stories of how the Civil War affected communities in Arkansas. The commission is housed within the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, a state Department of Arkansas Heritage agency.

Witt Springs in the Civil War will commemorate a skirmish in Searcy County and a Confederate raid into Missouri. The marker is sponsored by Witt Springs Community Voices and will be placed at the old Witt Springs School campus on Arkansas 16.

Camps in Bayou Meto, commemorating Confederate camps and Union operations along Bayou Meto in modern-day Jacksonville, will be placed at 315 Division St. in Jacksonville. The marker is sponsored by the Reed's Bridge Battlefield Preservation Society.

A Camp Shaver marker will commemorate where the Seventh Arkansas Infantry of the Confederate States of America mustered and trained in Randolph County in 1861. The marker will be located at 2500 U.S. 62 West in Pocahontas. The marker is sponsored by the Col. Robert G. Shaver Camp No. 1655, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The three markers raise to 139 the number of Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Markers approved by the commission, with at least one in all 75 Arkansas counties. Marker applications are available at the commission's website, arkansascivilwar150.com. The commission's work ends this year.
