Earnings news good for Arkansas Index

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 0.65 to 337.24 Tuesday.

"The major market averages closed higher Tuesday as investors shifted their focus to earnings reports," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

Bear State Financial fell 8 percent on above-average volume, Williams said, and Home Bancshares gained 2.3 percent in active trading.

Total volume of the index was 22.3 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
