ASU pulls away from Henderson State

Khadija Brown-Haywood had 19 points and Aundrea Gamble added 13 as the Arkansas State women’s basketball team ran away from Henderson State in the third quarter of a 91-63 exhibition victory Tuesday night in Jonesboro. Brown-Haywood finished 8 of 9 from the floor while Brittney Gill added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Red Wolves, who led 37-32 going into halftime. ASU outscored Henderson State 29-13 in the third quarter and 25-18 in the fourth. ASU scored 21 points off 26 Henderson State turnovers and shot 55.3 percent from the floor in the second half. Haleigh Henson led Henderson State with 22 points, while Dulincia Keener had 14 points and Victoria Stewart had 10.

Arkansas Baptist College beats Connors St.

Latron Thomas scored 23 points as Arkansas Baptist College (2-0) beat Connors State (1-1) 88-83 on Tuesday night in Little Rock. Connors State was ranked No. 5 in the preseason NJCAA Division I men’s basketball poll. Stevie Clark had 21 points, Kaanan Jackson 16 and Ruston Hayward 11 for the Buffaloes. Deven Simms scored a game-high 29 points for Connors State.

UCA's Svensson captures LR Golf Classic

University of Central Arkansas freshman Emma Svensson shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday, her highest round of the tournament, but still finished at 8-under 208 to capture medalist honors at Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village.

Svensson held at least a share of the lead in all three rounds and beat UALR's Stina Resen and Eastern Michigan's Thelma Beck, who tied for second at even-par 216. Resen trailed Svensson by four strokes heading into Tuesday but shot a 4-over 76 on the final day.

Abigail Laker was Arkansas State's highest finisher. She shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 12th at 6-over 222.

Missouri State won the team title, shooting an 887, three strokes ahead of second-place UCA, which shot an 890. UALR was six strokes back in third at 896, while ASU shot a 911 and finished eighth.

Eoff national player of week

Purdue junior Austin Eoff of Benton was named Golfweek’s National Player of the Week. Eoff, a junior, won his first career title last Tuesday when he shot 13-under 203 (64-67-72) at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. His opening-round 64 is the fourth-best round in school history, and he has finished among the top 10 in seven consecutive events while posting five consecutive rounds of even par or better. He is ranked No. 19 nationally in the latest Golfstat rankings and 21st by Golfweek. He owns a 71.00 stroke average this season.

OBU's Hatcher honored

Ouachita Baptist University senior Haley Hatcher earned the Great American Conference's offensive player of the week and the NSAAA Division II player of the week awards

Hatcher, of Little Rock, scored five goals in two matches last week for the Lady Tigers. She has 17 goals this season, the seventh-most by any player in Division II.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Three LR players All-Americans

Pulaski Academy junior Hunter Harrison and freshman Wesley Barnett and Little Rock Christian senior Stuart Riser were selected as All-Americans by the National High School Tennis Association.

The honor is given to players who have excelled in high school tennis and at USTA/ITA events during the fall 2015 season.

Harrison won the Class 5A singles title and overall title while Barnett teamed with Jake Bridges to win the Class 5A doubles title and overall title. Riser played in the Class 5A singles and overall final but lost to Harrison.
