Monticello man dies as passenger in two-vehicle crash

A Monticello man died Thursday after the vehicle he was a passenger in was struck in a two-vehicle crash in Drew County, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

The driver of a 2009 Ford Focus, 21-year-old Newton Lagrone of Monticello, was traveling east on Arkansas 35 about 3:29 p.m. Thursday when he crossed the centerline into the path of a westbound 2012 Toyota Yaris driven by 60-year-old Ouida F. Carter of Monticello, state police said.

According to the report, the Yaris and the Focus collided on their right front corners about 3 miles east of Monticello.

Gordon Russel Carter, 58, a passenger in the Yaris, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

Ouida F. Carter and Lagrone were injured in the crash and were transported for medical treatment, according to authorities. Their conditions were not known as of Friday afternoon.

Travel conditions at the time of the crash were described as clear and dry.

The death was the 435th in a crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
