Seattle fans bucking Fox broadcasters

Troy Aikman didn’t put a lot of credence Wednesday into an online petition by Seattle Seahawks fans seeking to ban him and Fox broadcast partner Joe Buck from Seahawks games.
Troy Aikman didn’t put a lot of credence Wednesday into an online petition by Seattle Seahawks fans seeking to ban him and Fox broadcast partner Joe Buck from Seahawks games.

Seattle Seahawks fans are known for being loud at CenturyLink Field, but they're calling for silence from the broadcast booth.

An online petition is calling for the Fox Sports tandem of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to be banned from calling future Seahawks games.

The petition, which had nearly 15,000 signatures as of Thursday morning, reads, "The Seattle Seahawks 12th man are growing increasingly tired of the negative remarks that are consistently made against our team by Fox Sports commentators Troy Aikman & Joe Buck. As nationally televised games, we understand that the commentators need to be sensitive to both the fans of the home and away team. However, Aikman & Buck's comments heavily favor any and all of the Seahawks opponents. Their comments are incredibly critical and degrading. Not only do we respectfully request, the 12th Man DEMANDS that these two commentators be banned from calling any future Seahawk games."

It's not clear when the petition was created, but Buck had no hand in last Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys because he was in New York to call Game 5 of the World Series. Thom Brenneman filled in for him on play-by-play.

Seahawks fans aren't the first to call for a ban on the Buck-Aikman team. There have been multiple petitions to ban them from calling Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers games for the same reason, but those petitions did not receive the response the Seahawks petition has. There also was a petition started in recent years to ban CBS analyst Phil Simms from calling Denver Broncos games.

For his part, Aikman didn't give the petition much credibility Wednesday on Twitter.

"I just read where we hate the Seahawks...& Cowboys & Giants &... C'mon, which is it?? #givemeabreak #growup," Aikman tweeted.

Better now than later

Former Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones wore a sling on his right arm and shoulder Wednesday when he spoke to the Northwest Arkansas Touchdown Club.

Jones said he had the surgery three weeks ago to repair a torn labrum he suffered in the spring of 2002, prior to his junior season with the Razorbacks.

Jones said he injured his shoulder by overthrowing in the spring after he missed some practices because he was playing for the basketball team.

Surgery wasn't a good option at time of the injury, Jones said, because he was told by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews that his chances of making a full recovery were only 20 percent.

"I would have had to go to receiver that next year or whatever, and I didn't want to do that," Jones said. "I wanted to try to play quarterback as long as I could.

"If they had said there was an 80 percent chance that you'll be able to throw again, I would have done it. When the number's like 20 percent, it was tough for me to actually go through with it then."

Jones' shoulder became so painful that he decided to have surgery 13 years after the injury.

"It just got to the point where I couldn't play catch, I couldn't fish, I couldn't do all the regular things I wanted to do," he said. "I put it off as long as I could."
