deGrom puts scissors away; locks to stay

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom doesn’t have any problem being noticed thanks to his long hair.
New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom doesn’t have any problem being noticed thanks to his long hair.

Just call him Samson.

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom was easily recognized during the team's World Series run by his long, brown hair, but he told ESPN.com's Adam Rubin last month that he was sick and tired of his flowing locks.

"It's driving me nuts, deGrom said. "I've got to get rid of it."

Hold the clippers.

"Breaking news: Jacob deGrom has decided NOT to cut off his hair," Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reported, via Twitter. "Everyone can breathe now."

In a followup tweet Ackert reported that deGrom "said he will get it cleaned up, but not chopped off as he threatened."

Maybe he's angling for a lucrative shampoo endorsement.

Police matters

Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen's career day drew a lot of attention Saturday.

Allen completed 33 of 45 passes for 442 yards and a school-record 6 touchdowns, leading the Razorbacks to a 53-52 overtime victory over Mississippi in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss.

Allen was having such a good day that the Oxford Police Department issued this advisement via Twitter: "Asking us to kick the Arkansas QB out of the stadium is not a legit reason to dial 911."

The tweet, presumably in jest, had more than 5,300 retweets and 3,200 likes less than an hour after it was posted during the second half of Saturday's game. By Sunday afternoon, those number had jumped to more than 18,000 retweets and 14,000 likes.

In related news, police in Nashville, Tenn., have issued an APB for the Vanderbilt offense.

Hallow-when?

American skier Lindsey Vonn has dealt with her share of injuries.

She took a scary fall during training at the 2006 Olympics, then left the hospital to compete; hurt her knee in training and missed two races at the 2007 worlds; raced with a severely bruised shin at the 2010 Olympics, and withdrew midway through the 2011 world championships because of a concussion.

Her latest trouble? After spending the past three months recovering from a broken ankle, Vonn had to receive stitches in her right thumb Saturday after trying to break up a fight between her two dogs over a Frisbee.

"This is what I get," Vonn wrote in a post on Instagram, along with a picture of her thumb. "An amazing Jimmy Fallon belated Halloween costume!"

They said it ...

• Retired NASCAR driver Mark Martin of Batesville, via Twitter, after NASCAR suspended Matt Kenseth for two races for intentionally wrecking Joey Logano: "What's wrong with a good old-fashioned ass-whipping? I always felt like if I had one coming that was a better option than tearing up cars."

• Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times, on LPGA golfer Stacy Lewis (Arkansas Razorbacks), a six-time runner-up and earner of $1,832,425 in 2015, the highest total for an LPGA player without winning a tournament: "She credits it all to her stubbornness, her perseverance -- and wearing her lucky Buffalo Bills socks."

• Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, on the Louisville basketball sex scandal: "I just hope being linked to big-time college athletics doesn't harm the reputation of the escort-stripper business."
