Car-Mart jump leads index's 4.74 climb

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 4.74 to 340.86 Tuesday.

"The major markets averages were mixed as concerns over slowing growth in the global economy moved buyers to the sidelines," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

America's Car-Mart jumped more than 9 percent in active trading, Williams said.

Windstream fell 4.3 percent on average volume, Williams said.

Total volume of the index was 20.5 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
