Wal-Mart hires 107,000 veterans

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has hired 107,000 U.S. veterans since it made a 2013 pledge to hire at least 100,000.

CEO Doug McMillon announced the updated number and a goal of hiring at least 250,000 by 2020 during a Veterans Day ceremony at the Wal-Mart home office. McMillon said the retailer, which employs more than 1 million people in the U.S., has promoted about 12,000 of the veterans hired the last two years.

"We need more leaders," McMillon said. "There is a rich population of leaders in the veteran community."

Included in those totals are 3,000 veterans hired in Arkansas since the retailer launched its Veterans Welcome Home program in May 2013. Wal-Mart pledged then to hire any eligible U.S. veteran that had been honorably discharged from active duty.

During last year's Veterans Day event, Wal-Mart said it had hired 67,000 vets, promoting 5,000.
