Gamble shoots Arkansas State to victory

ARKANSAS STATE 77, TENNESSEE TECH 55

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Aundrea Gamble scored 18 points and was one of four players to score at least 10 points in the Arkansas State's 77-55 victory over Tennessee Tech in the season-opener for both teams Saturday night.

Gamble was 7 of 8 from the field, including 2 of 3 on three-pointers. She added 4 rebounds and 6 assists in the victory.

Jessica Flanery finished with 15 points on 4 of 8 shooting while Khadija Brown-Haywood had 12 and Brittney Gill had 11.

The Red Wolves shot 43.9 percent (25 of 57) from the floor, including 9 of 23 three-pointers.

They held Tennessee Tech to 28.3 percent (17 of 60) field-goal shooting. Arkansas State led the Golden Eagles in rebounds 42-37, had 11 steals to Tennessee Tech's 6. The Red Wolves had 19 turnovers to the Golden Eagles' 21.

Samaria Howard and Takisha Jordan led Tennessee Tech with 12 points while Hannah Goolsby had 10.

SWAC WOMEN

NEBRASKA 96, UAPB 46

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Natalie Romero scored 30 points and had 4 assists in 26 minutes leading Nebraska to a rout in the season-opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Romero was 11 of 18 from the floor and made 6 of 9 three-pointers. Jessica Shepard added 24 points and 13 rebounds in 23 minutes including 8 of 13 from the free-throw line. Rache Theriot had 10 pointss.

The Cornhuskers led 19-12 after the first quarter and 46-26 at halftime before outscoring the Golden Lions 28-7 in the third quarter.

Nebraska shot 51.5 percent from the floor (34 of 66), including 6 of 13 on three-pointers, while holding UAPB to 29.5 percent field-goal shooting (18 of 61). Nebraska outrebounded UAPB 50-35 and had 6 turnovers to UAPB's 17.

UAPB was led by Niya Head, who finished with 16 points on 7 of 17 shooting.

SOUTHLAND MEN

TULSA 98, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 81

TULSA -- Tulsa pulled away in the second half for the victory Saturday in the season-opener for both teams at the Reynolds Center.

The Golden Hurricane led 44-38 at halftime but UCA's D'Andre Wright made a layup and a free throw at the 19:08 mark of the second half to trim the deficit to 44-41. Tulsa then outscored the Bears 14-2 over the next 4:13.

James Woodard followed with a layup to make it 49-43 and added two free throws to make it 51-43. Woodard then made a three-pointer to make it 54-43 before UCA called timeout.

Mathieu Kamba made two free throws before Brandon Swannegan made a layup to make it 56-45. Shaquillle Harrison had a dunk tor a 58-45 Tulsa lead, Swannegan made a free throw then added a layup to make it 61-45 with 13:55 remaining.

Woodard led the Golden Hurricane with 23 points on 8 of 13 shooting, including 5 of 7 three-pointers. Harrison added 22 points and Wright had 11.

Tulsa shot 58.5 percent (38-65) from the floor, including 10 of 21 three-pointers.

The Bears were led by Derreck Brooks, who had 25 points on 10 of 16 shooting, including 5 of 9 three-pointers. Jordan Howard had 16 points and Justin Foreman had 14.

The Bears shot 50.9 percent from the floor (29 of 57), including 11 of 23 three-pointers.
