Up to five inches of rain could fall in large areas of Arkansas Monday and Tuesday.

Up to 5 inches of rain is forecast over two days in parts of Arkansas in storms that could turn severe, the National Weather Service said Monday.

Forecasters predict showers and a few thunderstorms will develop Monday night while Tuesday will bring a strengthening low-pressure system with more rain. A flash flood watch that begins Monday night covers almost the entire state.

A news release from the weather service's North Little Rock office says the chances for severe weather, including damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, are most likely in south Arkansas.

The severity of storms will depend on how much the air in Arkansas heats up ahead of the storm, forecasters said.

The rains will end from the west by early Wednesday, according to weather service forecasts.
