Panel recommends Hutchinson look at tax increases, revenue shifts for roads

LITTLE ROCK — A panel formed by Gov. Asa Hutchinson to study Arkansas' highway funding shortfall says he should look at several proposals to raise taxes and shift revenue for roads but isn't endorsing a specific plan.

The Governor's Working Group on Highway Funding approved the recommendations Thursday to raise at least $160 million a year for roads and plans to submit its final report to Hutchinson early next month.

The recommendations include raising fuel taxes, fees for hybrid and electric vehicles and gradually shifting revenue from car sales to highways. The group isn't recommending a specific option, instead offering a range for the Republican governor to consider.

Hutchinson in April formed the 20-member group to come up with recommendations by Dec. 15 on changes to highway funding.
