VOLLEYBALL

UALR, ASU advance in Sun Belt Tournament

Arkansas State and UALR will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Statesboro, Ga.

No. 1 seed Arkansas State (26-1) defeated No. 8-seed Georgia Southern 25-20, 25-22, 26-24. Fifth-seeded UALR (14-13) defeated No. 4-seed Texas Arlington 25-23, 25-19, 25-19.

Carlisa May led the Red Wolves with 12 kills while Drew Jones had 10. Mallory Warrington had 36 assists. Georgia Southern (10-19) was led by Megan Chevalier, who had 13 kills and Lauren Reichard had 10.

Marina Avram had a match-high 13 kill for the Trojans against the Mavericks (19-10). Megan Mathis had a match-high 39 assists and Edina Sellmovic had 3 aces and 4 blocks while Priscila Almeida had 16 digs.

UCA falls to Sam Houston State

Central Arkansas lost 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 to Sam Houston State in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament at the Farris Center in Conway.

Heather Schars led the Sugar Bears (16-13) with 11 kills and 11 digs. Samantha Anderson had 9 and Megan Nash had 7.

Amy South had 31 assists. Corri Hunt and Allie Kemp had 11 digs.

Sam Houston State (14-17) was led by Jordyn Vaughn, who had 14 kills.

Hendrix falls match short of final

The Hendrix College volleyball program’s best season came to an end Friday with a loss to Wittenberg in the NCAA Division III semifinals in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Wittenberg beat Hendrix 25-14, 16-25, 25-21, 25-13 to advance to today’s final. Hendrix, with AVCA Coach of the Year Ryan Meek, finished 29-9.
