Police: Joy ride, theft of cash from car lead to Fayetteville man's arrest

A Fayetteville man questioned about breaking into vehicle admitted to taking a sport utility vehicle for a joyride after watching the intoxicated driver walk off, according to police.

Police suspected Melvin Farris, 22, of 2860 Coy Kaylor in Fayetteville, of breaking into vehicles and thought he could possibly be connected to instances of vehicle theft, according to a preliminary police report for Farris' arrest.

On Sept. 24 a person reported a Cadillac broken into overnight with $50 in change missing from the unlocked vehicle parked in the 1500 block of Plum Tree Drive, according to police.

During a police interview Saturday, Farris acknowledged taking $50 in change from a Cadillac in September, according to a preliminary police report. When questioned about stolen vehicles he told police he had taken a brown GMC sport utility vehicle, according to he report. Farris told police the driver was intoxicated and dropped the keys to the vehicle and walked off. Farris took the vehicle for a joy ride before loaning it to a relative, according to the preliminary report.

Police went to the area where the Farris said the vehicle was parked and found a GMC Terrain reported stolen on Nov. 8 from Mountain Ranch Apartments, 400 N. Coral Canyon Loop, according to a preliminary police report.

Farris was arrested Saturday in connection with theft of a motor vehicle, breaking or entering and theft of property from a vehicle. Farris was being held Sunday in the Washington County Detention Center on a $2,500 bond.
