QB Rivers can't jolt Chargers

The San Diego Chargers' free-fall continues. It's hard to say they've hit rock bottom because there are six games left.

There was certainly a meltdown on Sunday, when the Chargers were embarrassed 33-3 by AFC West rival Kansas City, their sixth consecutive loss.

Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was seen jawing at quarterback Philip Rivers on the sideline in the first half.

Rivers served up a 17-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Justin Houston, the fourth time Rivers has yielded an interception returned for a touchdown.

Rivers said the Chargers (2-8) still have plenty to play for, even if they're likely out of playoff contention.

"I think it's just about being a pro at this point. Are you going to be a man and come to work every day and do your job? I think that is what it is," Rivers said. "The ball is going to get kicked off next Sunday and Jacksonville sure the heck isn't going to feel sorry for us. If we want to keep getting embarrassed like this, then we can lollygag around and we will. They will beat us just like this if we have this approach."

The Chiefs (5-5) won their fourth consecutive game after a five-game losing streak.

Rivers, who has passed for 3,211 yards, 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, had his worst game of the season, completing 19 of 30 passes for 178 yards.

Lynch ailing

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch will travel to Philadelphia today to see Dr. William C. Meyers and hopefully determine what is wrong with his abdomen.

Coach Pete Carroll said the injury could be a sports hernia and didn't rule out that Lynch could have to have surgery.

"Nothing is ruled out at this point," Carroll told The Seattle Times. "This will be a real important couple of days for Marshawn and we will know by Wednesday probably."

Lynch suffered the injury in practice Nov. 12, a Thursday, but played with it against Arizona.

Carroll said Friday that he expected Lynch to play again against the 49ers. But Lynch was declared inactive for Sunday's game after it was decided during pregame warmups he could not play.

Lynch signed a new contract in March that pays him an average of $12 million a season through 2017. But Seattle could save $6.5 million against the cap next year if it were to release him.

His backup, Thomas Rawls, rushed for 209 yards and added 46 receiving yards on 3 receptions in the Seahawks' 29-13 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at CenturyLink Field. Rawls, a rookie, had two of Seattle's touchdowns: one on the ground and one through the air.

Flacco out

The hits keep on coming for the Baltimore Ravens in 2015.

Quarterback Joe Flacco became the latest player to see his season prematurely end in what has quickly become the franchise's most disappointing season because of a series of injuries and close losses.

Baltimore beat St. Louis 16-13 on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium, but they lost Flacco, their franchise quarterback, for the remainder of the season.

On the first play of the Ravens' game-winning drive, Flacco tore the anterior cruciate ligament and likely the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, injuries that end his season and put his status for 2016 in jeopardy.

The Ravens, who are 3-7 heading into next Monday's game against the Cleveland Browns, will start 12th-year quarterback Matt Schaub going forward, and sign a backup quarterback early this week.

Starting running back Justin Forsett also suffered a season-ending injury Sunday, as he broke two bones in his forearm. Forsett and Flacco join starters such as wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., wide receiver and first-round NFL draft pick Breshad Perriman, center Jeremy Zuttah and one of their top pass rushers, linebacker Terrell Suggs, on the season-ending injury list.
