Freshman guard sparks Har-Ber to comeback victory

SPRINGDALE -- Freshman Tylor Perry introduced himself Monday in Wildcat Arena.

Perry scored 13 points in his second varsity game to help Springdale Har-Ber to a 60-47 comeback victory over Valley View in a nonconference game at Wildcat Arena. Perry was the ringleader in the third quarter when Har-Ber outscored Valley View 20-8 to overcome a 27-18 deficit at halftime.

Valley View (1-1) Gorton 15, Horn 15, Owens 12, Cornelious 5.

Har-Ber (1-1) Benson 14, Perry 13, Brandon 10, Taylor 7, Hampton 4, Garrett 4, Kaunitz 4, King 2, Benson 2.

The halftime break did some good for Har-Ber (1-1) and especially Perry. The 5-foot-9 guard scored 11 points in the second half and tied the game 33-33 with a mid-range jumper. He then put Har-Ber ahead with a long 3-pointer that bounced twice on the rim before falling through.

Avery Benson followed with two free throws to give Har-Ber a 38-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Perry continued to emerge with a no-look pass that resulted in a layup by Josh Bedford to put Har-Ber ahead 48-36.

"Little man (Perry) put on an exhibition," Springdale Har-Ber coach Scott Bowlin said. "If he gets to be 6-1 or 6-2 one of these days, he's going to be hard to deal with."

Adam Horn and Alexander Gorton each scored 15 points for Valley View, which went 24-2 last season after losing to Little Rock Fair in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. Valley View (1-1) will play a game at Morrilton today before heading back to the Jonesboro area.

"We knew they were going to run and be more physical in the second half," Valley View coach Jason Manchester said of the Class 7A Wildcats. "I thought our guys were trying to referee more than playing the game. But this is a learning experience for us."

The game matched two recent Harding signees, Horn and JP Brandon of Har-Ber. Brandon finished with nine points after he scored 23 in a loss to Hot Springs. Avery Benson led the Wildcats with 14 points.

Valley View scored eight consecutive points to take a 27-18 lead at halftime. Left-hander Matt Owens made two 3-pointers and fed Adam Horn for a sweeping layup to give Valley View the momentum after two quarters.

Har-Ber mostly struggled with turnovers and missed shots while falling behind at halftime. On consecutive possessions, Har-Ber threw the ball out of bounds on a crosscourt pass and another player dribbled the ball off his foot near midcourt.

"We're still trying to find ourselves, but we played good defense in the second half," Bowlin said. "We've got guys trying to figure out where they fit in, but they're going to get it."
