12-year-old pedestrian hit by 2 cars, killed

A 12-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by two westbound cars on a road in Jonesboro on Monday night, police said.

According to a report, 47-year-old Michelle Smith of Bono was traveling on Dan Avenue at Royale Drive about 5:20 p.m. Monday when the pedestrian ran into traffic from the north onto the road in a southbound direction.

Smith's 2006 Chrysler 300 struck the pedestrian, causing the child to be thrown into the outside lane.

A second vehicle, a 2005 Toyota Corolla driven by 27-year-old Kevin Elkins of Jonesboro, then struck and ran over the child, police said.

The 12-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by Craighead County Coroner Toby Emerson. Authorities did not release the identity of the minor.

No other injuries were mentioned in the police report.
