78-year-old woman killed, 3 hurt in three-vehicle crash

A 78-year-old woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in Jonesboro, according to police.

Jonesboro resident Inelda Nelson was traveling east on East Johnson Avenue at Disciple Drive about 9:56 a.m. when her 2009 Chrysler 300 crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic.

The driver of a westbound 1998 Toyota XTR, 50-year-old Charles Janes of Paragould, swerved his pickup in an attempt to avoid a crash, police said. According to authorities, Janes' truck was then struck on its side by Nelson's car, causing his truck to spin out.

According to police, 77-year-old Betty Janes of Paragould was a passenger in Charles' truck.

Nelson's car continued on and collided head-on with another westbound vehicle, a 2011 Nissan Rogue driven by 30-year-old Ashley Fletcher of Brookland.

All occupants in the three vehicles were transported to NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro, where Nelson was later pronounced dead, police said.

The exact conditions of the three others involved in the crash were not known as of Wednesday evening.

Police information did not include travel conditions at the time of the crash.
