Arkansas Index rides market to 1.86 gain

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 1.86 to 332.48 Tuesday.

"The major market averages closed marginally higher as geopolitical concerns overshadowed a mixed bag of economic reports," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

Windstream gained 3.8 percent on near average volume, Williams said.

America's Car-Mart fell almost 5.2 percent in active trading, he said.

Tyson Foods hit a 52-week high.

Total volume of the index was 36.6 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
