Cristofer Nicasio was given a Feb. 23 court date by Circuit Judge Joanna Taylor. Attorneys are awaiting the results of a requested mental examination.

Resetting the case marked the second delay because a mental exam has not been completed.

Nicasio and the 16-year-old shooting victim were Springdale High School students, police said.

Nicasio is charged as an adult because prosecutors believe he intended to kill the victim, said Matt Durrett, Washington County prosecuting attorney.

Nicasio will remain in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center near the Washington County jail.

The shooting happened at 4:13 p.m. Aug. 19. Police received reports of five to nine gunshots and a 16-year-old being wounded, according to the Springdale Police Department. Nicasio was arrested in Lowell later the same day.
