According to police, William Dickerson, 47, was traveling "at a high rate of speed" when he left Arkansas 5 and drove onto a warehouse for Tops Shoes, which is located off Interstate 30 east of the Military Road overpass.

Dickerson was taken to a local hospital for injuries described as not life-threatening.

Authorities said Dickerson, a parolee, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, first-degree criminal mischief, possession of a prohibited article and driving on a suspended license.

Bart Dickinson, who owns the shoe store, said the road is nearly level with the rear of the structure.

Dickinson said officials were worried the roof might collapse if the car was driven off or removed by a tow truck, so a large crane was brought in to lift it. He said the roof sustained significant damage.

Police said an investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed.
