COWBOYS

Romo out for season

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Tony Romo knew he was risking another left collarbone injury by coming back eight weeks after breaking it.

The Dallas quarterback won't have to worry about another return. He's out for the season this time.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said on his radio show Friday that Romo would sit out the remaining five games with a small fracture in the same collarbone that had already sidelined him for seven games.

Romo will not need surgery after getting hurt in the third quarter of Thursday's 33-14 loss to Carolina. He didn't need surgery after breaking the collarbone in Week 2 at Philadelphia, either.

It's the third fracture in Romo's non-throwing shoulder in his nine-year career as the Dallas starter. He missed most of 2010 after getting hurt against the New York Giants.

"The hard part is playing when you're trying not to get hurt, which is silly," Romo said after he threw three interceptions and Carolina returned two of them for touchdowns before the injury. "I'm disappointed in costing our team a good chance to stay in the game early. Then on top of it, who knows how long after that. It's just a disappointing day."

Romo was in his second game back after the Cowboys (3-8) lost seven consecutive without him. The skid ended in his return at Miami, and the Carolina loss was his first of the season.

"We felt that the risk was worth the potential of having him be the impact he can be and he is on our team," Jones said on his radio show. "You shouldn't ever quit trying to do something that is extraordinary. The dream was if Tony could have come in, been the catalyst, played similarly and had results we had the week before against Miami ... that it would've been the beginning of maybe something special."

Matt Cassel, who started four games during Romo's first absence, will be the starter as long as he's healthy. He lost all four of his starts after Brandon Weeden was 0-3 filling in for Romo. The Cowboys released Weeden the week Romo was activated, and he signed with Houston.

RAMS

QB Keenum iffy

ST. LOUIS -- Unless Case Keenum passes the NFL concussion protocol Saturday, St. Louis will turn to benched starter Nick Foles at quarterback.

Keenum split practice time Friday with Foles, who was relieved of his duties two weeks ago by Coach Jeff Fisher. Keenum had returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday after missing Tuesday's workout because of a concussion.

The Rams (4-6) did not make Keenum available to reporters after the practice because he's still in the concussion protocol.

Keenum made his first start of the season last week and was injured when his helmet banged into the turf after being sacked with about a minute to play in a 16-13 loss at Baltimore. He threw for 136 yards, going 12 of 26, and lost two fumbles.

Fisher benched Foles two weeks ago after a 37-13 blowout loss to the visiting Bears.

BRONCOS

Ware out Sunday

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- DeMarcus Ware's lower back injury will keep him out of Sunday night's showdown between the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots.

Ware hasn't played since aggravating the injury against the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 8 shortly after jumping into the top 10 on the all-time sacks list at 133 1-2.

Ware said he hopes to return next week at San Diego.

He was officially ruled out along with Peyton Manning (foot), who will be out until mid-December. Brock Osweiler will make his second consecutive start in Manning's place.

Left guard Evan Mathis is questionable with a sprained ankle. If he can't play, rookie Max Garcia will make his first NFL start in his place.

Receiver Emmanuel Sanders (ankle) is probable.

COLTS

Luck, Castonzo banged up

INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts Coach Chuck Pagano made it official Friday: Andrew Luck and left tackle Anthony Castonzo will miss Sunday's game.

Luck will miss his second consecutive game with a lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscle. Castonzo will miss his first game since 2011 with a sprained right medial collateral ligament.

Pro Bowl safety Mike Adams (ankle) is doubtful, while cornerback Greg Toler (groin) and outside linebacker Erik Walden (heel) are listed as questionable after doing limited work in Friday's practice.

Inside linebackers Jerrell Freeman (ribs), D'Qwell Jackson (hamstring) and Sio Moore (back), cornerbacks Vontae Davis (hamstring) and D'Joun Smith (knee) and running back Frank Gore (ankle) are all listed as probable.

Indy (5-5) hosts Tampa Bay (5-5).
