The 81-year-old founder of a Little Rock-based travel agency with a legacy spanning more than 50 years died over the weekend, Poe Travel said Monday.

Fred Poe, and his wife, Tina, founded Frederick Poe Travel Service, now Poe Travel, in 1961 with "innovative travel planning as its signature," according to a company description posted to Facebook.

Margaret Kemp, CEO of Poe Travel, said Poe died Friday after landing in Vancouver for a scheduled train trip across Canada.

"He was doing what he always loved to do, forever traveling," Kemp said.

Poe first became active in the travel industry in 1958 during a brief apprenticeship in Montana, according to a biography on the agency's website.

Over the years, Poe featured a number of his excursions in blog posts, including trips to Yemen, Austria and China.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported on Poe's trip to North Korea in 2007, detailing what the agency's founder said was "the oddest place I've ever been in a half century of traveling."

Ruebel Funeral Home of Little Rock will be handling Poe's private funeral service. A public celebration of life ceremony is planned for 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Capital Hotel in Little Rock.
