SAU to celebrate 100th homecoming

Southern Arkansas University will celebrate its 100th homecoming with several events this week, leading up to the Oct. 10 anniversary.

The 4,138-student campus will start the festivities with a pep rally in the Greek Theatre at 6 p.m. Monday. Other weekday events include a drive-in movie Tuesday in the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center parking lot and the Great SAU Campout and Bonfire on Friday.

Saturday’s events include a 100 Years Royalty Brunch in the Reynolds Center’s Grand Hall at 11 a.m., Mulegating on the Ridge and the football game. SAU plays Oklahoma Baptist University at 2:30 p.m.

The Magnolia university had its first homecoming football game in 1915, when it was known as the Third District Agriculture School, according to a news release. At the time, the Muleriders were called the Magnolia Aggies, who celebrated a 7-0 win against the Boll Weevils on Thanksgiving, the news release states.

A list of events can be found online at SAUmag.edu/homecoming.

UAMS accredited for residency unit

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences earned accreditation for its new internal residency program in Northwest Arkansas.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education awarded the accreditation status to the academic medical center Sept. 23, according to a news release. UAMS is expecting its first eight resident physicians in July 2016 and will admit eight more annually for a three-year program.

The first group will see patients at Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas in Rogers and at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville, the news release states. They will also serve their residencies at a new UAMS Northwest Campus outpatient clinic, which is set to open next year.

“Internal medicine is a major primary care need in Arkansas — especially in rapidly growing northwest Arkansas — so this program enables us to begin addressing that need by increasing the number of internal medicine physicians starting their career there,” the UAMS College of Medicine dean, Dr. Pope Moseley, said in a prepared statement.

Fourth-year medical students must apply for the residency positions and later interview. Students will then submit their preferences to the National Resident Matching Program. Matches are announced at the same time nationwide to medical students on Match Day in March.

Food pantry opens at Arkansas State

Arkansas State University is the latest higher-education institution in the state to open a food pantry on campus.

The Student Government Association, working with Volunteer A-State, created the food pantry in February, according to a news release. Anyone with a university identification card is eligible to use the pantry, which will be open at the Volunteer A-State Center at 2907 E. Johnson Ave. in Jonesboro from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Thursday.

Student volunteers at the 13,410-student university are manning the food pantry, and Volunteer A-State is looking for more students to help stock the shelves, according to a news release. The group is also seeking other student organizations to help with the canned-food collection.

Canned goods and other donations can be dropped off at the pantry site during operating hours. Other drop-off times can be scheduled by emailing pantry@AState.edu.
