BUFFET ON BROADWAY

Sliders reach lofty status for Potluck Food Rescue

Food -- not just the promise of tasty dinner that evening, but rescuing leftover food to feed the hungry -- was the focus of Buffet on Broadway at Potluck Food Rescue on Sept. 25.

Four area chefs created sliders for the event. The trendy and tasty little gourmet sandwiches included a jerk pork slider and another with bacon, gruyere and sausage. Participating were Brian Kearns of Simply the Best Catering, Jeff Owens of Ciao Baci, Brandon Brown of Hillcrest Artisan Meats and Brian Deloney of Maddie's Place.

About 300 guests sat at tables under a tent on the parking lot to eat and enjoy music by the Joe Vick Quartet. Serving as event chairmen were Layne Poe, Todd Estes and Patrick Heron. The final tally was somewhere near $40,000, according to executive director Carol Herzog.

Money raised will help the nonprofit continue to "source, rescue and distribute nutritious food to help feed Arkansans at risk," Herzog said. The group gathers excess food from restaurants, stores and events and turns it right over for quick consumption to Potluck's partners in the community, food pantries, shelters and service providers for the homeless and needy.

Potluck collects and distributes more than 4 million pounds of food each year.
