Former Alabama QB to speak at LRTD Club

Former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker will be the guest speaker at today’s Little Rock Touchdown Club luncheon at the Embassy Suites in Little Rock.

Barker led Alabama to the 1992 national championship as quarterback, and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1994. The Crimson Tide was 27-11 with Barker as a starting quarterback. He now hosts a radio show in Birmingham, Ala.

Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. and the program will begin at 11:50 a.m. Admission is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers.

Arkansas beats No. 9 Florida in five sets

Pilar Victoria had 21 kills, her fifth time with 20 or more this season, and led Arkansas to a 25-23, 15-25, 25-19, 18-25, 18-16 victory over No. 9 Florida on Sunday at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville.

Okiana Valle added 17 digs and Chanell Clark-Bibbs added 5 blocks for the Razorbacks (13-2, 3-0), who have won five consecutive matches to tie their best start since 1998. It was Arkansas’ second victory over a top-15 team this season, after it beat then-No. 11 Wisconsin on Sept. 19.

Arkansas is 4-0 in five-set matches this season after Sunday’s victory over Florida (9-4, 1-3).

UALR beats Sun Belt leader

Caitlyn Eddy scored a goal and had an assist, Claire Palmer and Fail Garuba each scored and Sara Small had another shutout in UALR’s 3-0 victory over Georgia State on Sunday at the Coleman Sports & Recreation Complex. Eddy scored her goal in the final minute of the first half to give UALR (6-5-4, 1-1-2) a 1-0 lead in the first half over Georgia State (8-2-3, 2-1-1), which entered Sunday as the Sun Belt leader. Palmer’s goal came in the 55th minute off an Eddy corner kick and Garuba’s goal came with 11 minutes remaining. Small’s shutout streak has extended to 225 minutes.

ASU loses at home

Georgia Southern scored tow goals in the first half and Arkansas State could only get one back in the second as ASU lost 3-1 on Sunday in Jonesboro.

Jennifer Wittick scored in the 23rd minute and Melinda Lukas in the 27th for Georgia Southern (5-6-2, 2-1-1), and Wittick’s goal in the 55th minute made it 3-0. Sutton Wester’s goal in the 71st minute was the only scoring for ASU (2-10-1, 0-3-1).

UCA shutout on the road

Maria Gomez’ free kick in the final minute of the first half was the only goal of Abilene Christian’s 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas on Sunday in Abilene, Texas.

Abilene Christian (4-7-2, 3-1-1) held a 22-9 advantage in shots over UCA (6-7, 3-2), which had won three in a row before Sunday.

ASU sweeps on the road

Arkansas State swept Louisiana-Monroe 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 on Sunday in Monroe, La., to win its 11th consecutive match. Darby Graff led ASU (15-1, 6-0) with 13 kills while Carlisa May had 11. Mallory Warrington had 35 assists and 11 digs and Markie Shaedig had 12 digs for the Red Wolves, who are one of two remaining teams to not have lost a Sun Belt match.
