Glen R. Froehlich, 35, was arrested in the shooting deaths of his s̶t̶e̶p̶m̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r mother*, Helen Froehlich, 61, and a family friend, Frank Simpson, 60, according to the Boone County sheriff's office.

"The two appeared to have died from multiple gun shots and two house pets were found dead in the home after being shot also," a news release said.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Moore said Monday that the victims may have died a day or two before Froehlich's arrest.

Glen Froehlich was charged with two counts of capital murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, being a habitual offender and two counts of cruelty to animals. He was being held at the Boone County jail without bail until his first court appearance.

The bodies of Helen Froehlich and Simpson have been sent to the state Medical Examiner's office. The investigation is still ongoing.

On Saturday, deputies received a call about 7 p.m. to do a welfare check at a house on Cedar Grove Road near Lead Hill. That's when they discovered the bodies of the victims.

Moore said Glen Froehlich's father helped police Saturday.

"His father felt like he had done it and felt like he was still on the property," Moore said.

Police found Glen Froehlich in a nearby house that his father owns. That house is under construction, but the walls are up, Moore said.

Police called Glen Froehlich on his cellphone and eventually were able to talk him into coming out of the house without a weapon in his hand, Moore said.

"We finally coaxed him to come out the front door," Moore said. "He was very calm. I just asked him to get on the ground, and I put the handcuffs on him."

Moore said 16 officers had surrounded the house -- all of them from his sheriff's office, except for the Lead Hill police chief.

Moore said his office had received a call Sept. 19 that Glen Froehlich had threatened relatives with a firearm.

"He had fired a round into the ground and was acting dangerous," Moore said. "We went out -- responded -- and tried to locate him but were unsuccessful."

Moore said he didn't know whether Glen Froehlich had lived in the house with his stepmother and Simpson.

In 2010, Froehlich was arrested on a charge of hindering the apprehension of a Mount Judea woman accused of plotting to kidnap the son of Newton County Sheriff Keith Slape.

Froehlich, then 29, was arrested along with Cheryl Godfrey, Cindy Seeley and Cody Evans.

The 2010 arrest records spell Froehlich's first name as "Glenn."

The four were arrested Jan. 13, 2010, along with Tracy Waits of Mount Judea. She had been sought for 13 days over what officials said was her role in a plot to kidnap Slape's son and free her father, David Middleton, from jail.

Middleton had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap and delivery of methamphetamine and was sentenced to 30 years on each count.

*CORRECTION: Helen Froehlich of Lead Hill was the mother of Glen R. Froehlich, who was arrested Saturday in her death and that of Frank Simpson. Because of incorrect information from the Boone County sheriff's office, the relationship of the two Froehlichs was incorrectly described in an earlier version of this article published Tuesday.
