Style: October baseball

One of the highlights of the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, which gets underway this weekend, is sure to be The First Boys of Spring. The film is about the history of spring training in the Spa City, written and directed by University of Arkansas at Fayetteville journalism professor Larry Foley and narrated by native Arkansan Billy Bob Thornton, who was born in Hot Springs.

Our Philip Martin talked to Thornton about his involvement in the project — “the combination of baseball and Hot Springs made it kind of a no-brainer for me,” Thornton says. “Like most of us from where I’m from, I’m a Cardinals fan” — and lots of other things. Read all about it in Friday’s Style section.

We’ll also have Pier Marchant’s review of the Peter Pan origin story Pan, Dan Lybarger on the documentary He Named Me Malala and Martin’s review of Francis Ozon’s gender bending The New Girlfriend, along with Karen Martin’s weekly look at home video releases.

See Friday's Democrat-Gazette for full details.
