57-year-old arrested in White County shooting that injured wife, killed man

A 57-year-old Rosebud man has been arrested in a shooting early Thursday that injured his wife and killed a man who lived with the couple.

The White County sheriff's office said in a statement that James Valentine was booked into the White County jail on charges of first-degree murder and first-degree battery.

The agency said deputies responded about 2:45 a.m. to 107 Lowell Lane in Rosebud and found 40-year-old Michael Hammond suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

A second victim, identified as Valentine's wife, 42-year-old Julia Valentine, was said to have suffered a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening. She was located at a nearby residence and taken to the White County Medical Center in Searcy for treatment.

The victims lived in the home with James Valentine, police said, describing the shooting as "a result of a domestic disturbance."

James Valentine was being held on a $150,000 bail, authorities said.
