James Valentine, 57, was jailed on a preliminary first-degree murder charge in lieu of $150,000 bond in the death of Michael Hammond, 40, sheriff's Sgt. Heather Zomant said in a news release.

Valentine also was being held on one preliminary count of first-degree battery in the shooting of his wife, Julia Valentine, 42. Her injuries were not life-threatening, Zomant said.

The three shared the same Rose Bud residence on Lowell Lane, where the shootings took place, Zomant said.

"Both victims were confronted by Mr. Valentine, who was armed with a shotgun," she added.

James Valentine is scheduled to appear in White County Circuit Court on Dec. 1.
