Speaker to discuss Shroud of Turin

St. Edward Catholic Church, 801 Sherman St., Little Rock, will host a conference on the Shroud of Turin from Nov. 21-22. The program will be led by Adolfo Leon Orozco, a member of the Mexican Center of Sindonology (the study of the shroud), who also collaborates with the International Center for Sindonology in Turin, Italy.

The conference will be presented in English at 9 a.m. Nov. 21 and in Spanish at 6 p.m., as well as in Spanish at 4 p.m. Nov. 22.

The shroud, which appears to show an imprint of a face, is believed by many to be the burial cloth that covered Jesus after his death. Orozco will talk about the history of the shroud, as well as scientific studies of the cloth. Copies of the shroud will also be shown.

LR church hosting conversations on race

Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, is offering “A Conversation About Race,” 9:50-10:45 a.m. Sundays in October in the church’s Great Hall.

On Sunday, author Grif Stockley and LaVerne Bell-Tolliver, a professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, will offer historical perspectives on race in Little Rock.

State Sen. Joyce Elliott, Pulaski County 10th Division Circuit Judge Joyce Warren and Joseph Jones, professor of political science at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, will discuss what it’s like to be black in Little Rock on Oct. 18. The final discussion, on Oct. 25, will feature Ruth Shepherd, executive director of Just Communities of Arkansas. Shepherd will lead a discussion on what it’s like to be white in Little Rock and will share ideas on ways to work toward racial reconciliation.

The Rev. Steve Hancock, senior pastor of Second Presbyterian Church, serves as facilitator of the class, which is sponsored by the church’s Social Justice Advocacy Committee.

Hog on Hill food, fun to benefit many

Asbury United Methodist Church, 1700 Napa Valley Drive, Little Rock, will host Hog on the Hill from 4-7 p.m. Sunday.

The event will feature a barbecue cook-off and dessert bake-off, as well as music by Canvas, a silent auction, a climbing wall, petting zoo, fall festival games for children and a pumpkin patch. Barbecue dinners are $10 per person and a hot dog plate for children is $5. Pumpkins will be for sale and the other activities are free.

Proceeds from the event will be used by the church in support of missions, educational institutions and charitable operations, some of which include Camp Aldersgate, Philander Smith College, Hendrix College, the World Service Fund and the Lydia Patterson Institute. Money raised will also go to Arkansas Rice Depot, which helps feed children, families and senior citizens in Arkansas.

The barbecue cook-off will be judged by former Razorback Anthony Lucas, Steve “Wildman” Wilson of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Kim Aaron, chief executive officer of the Arkansas Rice Depot.
