UA gets $12 million grant for power grid security center

FAYETTEVILLE — The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $12.2 million grant for a new University of Arkansas research center focused on cybersecurity for electric power utilities.

Alan Mantooth, distinguished professor of electrical engineering, will serve as principal investigator and director of the new national center that focuses on the issue. Mantooth said the center will focus on protecting the U.S. electric energy delivery system from cyberattacks.

The researchers will identify and develop solutions for vulnerabilities across the U.S. power grid. The new cybersecurity research center will also include faculty from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Carnegie Mellon University, Florida International University and Lehigh University, along with UA-Fayetteville researchers.
