Washington County Fall cleanup this week

Washington County residents can get rid of unwanted bulky items this week during the annual, countywide cleanup.

"It's an opportunity for residents to clean up items they really aren't sure what to do with," said Sophia Stephenson, county Environmental Affairs & Recycling director.

The 2015 Fall Cleanup is set from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District at 11398 Bond Road in Prairie Grove and at Waste Management Eco-Vista Landfill at 11979 Arbor Acres Road in Springdale.

County residents may bring unwanted construction material, including vinyl siding, and furniture for free, according to a news release. All loads must be tied down or covered, Stephenson said.

Loads that weigh more than 4 tons will have a fee.

For example, at Boston Mountain Solid Waste District, loads weighing more than 4 tons will have a fee rate of $48 per ton plus tax, or 2½ cents per pound, Director Robyn Reed said.

Stephenson said people have brought in working items like hot tubs or boats, but Stephenson reminded people that all the items go to the landfill.

"Donate it first," Stephenson said. "Find somebody who can use it."

Officials will not accept household trash or hazardous waste, Stephenson said. If residents have house paint, for example, they should call ahead, Stephenson said. People who bring in more than four tires may have to pay a fee, she said.

Residents must provide proof of residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill.

Reed said residents should expect to wait in line if they come Saturday.
