Trial in shooting near Springdale High School delayed

FAYETTEVILLE -- A 17-year-old Springdale boy who pleaded not guilty in September to attempted capital murder related to a shooting near Springdale High School had his case reset Monday.

Cristofer Nicasio was given a Nov. 24 trial date in Washington County Circuit Court. Attorneys are awaiting the results of a requested mental examination.

Nicasio and the 16-year-old shooting victim are Springdale High School students, police said.

Nicasio is being charged as an adult because prosecutors believe he intended to kill the victim, said Matt Durrett, Washington County prosecuting attorney.

Nicasio will remain in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center near the Washington County jail.

The shooting happened about 4:13 p.m. Aug. 19. Police received reports of five to nine gunshots, and a 16-year-old being wounded, according to the Springdale Police Department.

Nicasio was arrested in Lowell later the same day. Two gangs were involved in the shooting, police spokesman Lt. Scott Lewis said soon after the crime.
