The University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees on Monday appointed Karla V. Hughes as the next chancellor of the system's Monticello campus.

Hughes currently serves as executive vice president and provost of the University of Louisiana System in Baton Rouge, La., according to the university.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that Hughes will start in her new role at UAM with an annual salary of $250,000 on Jan. 15, replacing Jack Lassiter, who retired in January.

Monday's teleconference meeting based in Little Rock also included a discussion during executive session regarding chancellor candidates for the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Those candidates are April Mason, provost and senior vice president of Kansas State University, and Joseph E. Steinmetz, executive vice president and provost at Ohio State University.

Another candidate, Jeffrey S. Vitter, provost and executive vice chancellor at University of Kansas, withdrew his candidacy Monday to take a chancellor job at the University of Mississippi, according to officials.

The Associated Press reported that the Mississippi College Board still needs to vote to make the selection official.
