One man was taken to the hospital and a deer was killed after police responded to a 911 call from a man who said his family was being attacked by an aggressive buck Friday.
In the 911 call, made around 8:20 p.m., caller David Baldwin can be heard breathing heavily as he requests someone "come here and shoot it" and describes the attack on his stepfather, Robert Branham, and other family members.
"It had him pinned, and then it got my mom, and I managed to hold it down while my wife got in the truck," Baldwin said on the call. "It flipped me three or four times."
Baldwin called back and said the deer had him trapped while he was standing in the back of his truck.
According to a report by the Pulaski County sheriff's office, police got to the home on Branham Road off Sparks Road and saw Baldwin standing in the back of the truck pointing at the deer, which quickly became aggressive to the officers.
The report said one of the officers fired a round from his county-issued shotgun at the body of the deer. The deer fell down but then stood back up, and the officer fired another round.
After the deer did not go down, a second officer fired a shot from his pistol, hitting the deer in its body and killing it, the report said.
Branham was taken to the hospital to be treated for severe lacerations on his arms and hands, according to the report.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission was notified and allowed the carcass to be released for meat.
Breeding season for deer occurs in the fall, when male deer can become aggressive toward other males and sometimes humans.
