Good news and bad

The good news, especially for Hillary Clinton, is that a character like Joe Biden has decided not to run for president. She'll have only Bernie Sanders to worry about, which isn't much despite his populist appeal.

The bad news is that a character like Joe Biden has decided not to run for president, what with his checkered past--which isn't all his. (Remember how he plagiarized the life story of some English baron and claimed it was his own?)

"While I will not be a candidate," Mr. Biden now says, "I will not be silent." So those who relish his sheer vulgarity still have something to look forward to.

Joe Biden might have brought some comic relief to a presidential campaign in contrast to Hillary Clinton's practiced, if not robotic, style. But this would have been his third try, and he may have decided that enough was more than enough. Besides, he's already achieved a father's highest ambition--that his son prove a better man than he was. Beau Biden, who died at 46 earlier this year of a brain cancer, will be remembered as a good soldier and outstanding citizen.

Conclusion: Get ready for a dull Democratic race for the presidential nomination, which now has gone back to the stage where Hillary Clinton was expected to be crowned as much as nominated. The action--not to say chaos--remains where it has always been this year: in the Republican race.
