Sofia V. Gonzalez
Where I live: Hillcrest neighborhood in Little Rock
Occupation: Adjunct professor for the art department at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I also work at Wildwood Park for the Arts in west Little Rock, and I teach community natural dye classes. Some of my art is on my website, sofiavgonzalez.com.
My favorite space is: My studio.
Why: My fiance and I transformed the second bedroom of our home in Hillcrest into a studio. I am a visual artist, and it is really important to me to have a constant space that I can dedicate to making art. My work is primarily textile-based, and sometimes it takes up the whole studio.
One window looks into the backyard, a close second favorite space. Nature is a constant inspiration for me.
Over the past two years, I have dyed about 100 yards of raw silk with natural materials I collected from outside, both in Northern California where I grew up and here in Little Rock. Since moving to Little Rock about a year ago, I have felt the urge to connect the colors from California to the new colors I am creating in Arkansas.
If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Make it less pristine! The crown molding and hardwood floor are original to our home, and I often find myself afraid to scratch the floor or drill into the wall. Thumbtacks are my friend!
