The boy's injuries were not life-threatening and he has been released from the hospital, Lt. Eric Varner of the Forrest City Police Department said Sunday.

The shot from a rifle originated from a small patch of woods next to a residential area and traveled to the football field where it struck the boy in the foot, Varner said.

"The kid was not a player in the game; he was watching the game from the stand area," Varner said.

The wooded area adjacent to the football field is not zoned for hunting, Varner said, adding that the type of rifle used in the shooting could not be disclosed.

Varner said the Forrest City Police Department is working with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to investigate the shooting.

The suspect will be charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and discharging a firearm and an arrest was likely Sunday, Varner said. He added that the state Game and Fish Commission may levy additional charges.
