Verizon to shed jobs, 14 regional offices

Verizon Communications Inc., the largest U.S. wireless carrier, informed employees Wednesday that its wireless operations will be reorganized and that there will be an unspecified number of job cuts.

The company's 20 regional offices will be reduced to six, Verizon spokesman Jim Gerace said Wednesday. He said some jobs will be eliminated though he declined to say how many. Sales and store employees won't be affected, he said.

Verizon's operation in Little Rock is a regional office, a source told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. A spokesman for the company declined Thursday to say whether the Little Rock regional office is to close. Verizon had 2,400 employees in Arkansas in 2010, the last number available. The company had a total workforce of 177,900 at the end of the third quarter.

Verizon bought Little Rock-based wireless provider Alltel Corp. in January 2009 for $28.1 billion.
